FCSO Celebrates Opening of New Medical Unit at Frederick County Adult Detention Center

FREDERICK, Md. (November 22, 2024)—Today, the Frederick County Sheriff's Office proudly unveiled the addition of a state-of-the-art medical unit at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center. This milestone project addresses a critical need to ensure that inmates have access to modern, comprehensive medical care within the facility.

“This medical unit is more than just an expansion; it’s an investment in the well-being of our inmate population and the operational efficiency of our detention center,” said Sheriff Jenkins. “This project represents years of planning and hard work, and we’re proud to finally open its doors to expand our ability to deliver services and enhance the health and safety of both our inmates and staff.”

While Warden Lt. Colonel William V. DeLauter, who played a key role in overseeing this project, could not be present for today’s opening, his contributions were instrumental in bringing this vision to life.

Construction of the medical unit was awarded to Towson Mechanical, and began on July 5, 2022, at a projected cost of $15,328,000. This 14,046-square-foot facility stands as a testament to the county’s commitment to thoughtful, forward-looking planning. The new medical unit is designed to accommodate future expansion, with the capability to add a second-floor housing unit.

The new facility will greatly reduce the need for medical transports to outside hospitals, saving the county thousands of dollars in medical costs and correctional officer overtime.

Currently, Wellpath, the contracted health provider for the detention center, will continue to deliver comprehensive medical care under a two-year agreement.
