FCSO SRO Program Returns for 24th Year in FCPS

FREDERICK, Md. (August 20, 2024) – The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) School Resource Officer (SRO) Program is returning for its 24th year in 51 Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS).

The SRO program assigns law enforcement officers to designated Frederick County High Schools and school feeders with the goal of creating and maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly learning environment for students and faculty members.

This year, the FCSO has selected 16 SROs based on their training, personality, and desire to be an SRO. They will serve as a law enforcement officer, instructor, mentor, and a role model to students.

“It’s important for the public, especially the parents and families of students, to be assured that the School Resources Officers are in the schools from day one through the entire school year,” said Sheriff Chuck Jenkins. “The Sheriff’s Office is committed to the safety and security of students, the staff, and protection of the school facilities.  We are fortunate as an agency to have deputies who want to serve as SROs and have the training and skill set to work with students, and the educational staff to keep schools safe for everyone.”

SROs foster a working relationship between the Sheriff’s Office and the school community through positive interaction and alternative youth activities that seek to reduce crime.

"Frederick County Public Schools is proud to continue our partnership with the Sheriff's Office through the SRO Program,” said Dr. Dysons, FCPS Superintendent. “These dedicated officers play a vital role in creating a safe and supportive learning environment. Their presence not only enhances school security but also builds positive relationships with students, helping to foster a community of trust and respect."

The SROs are the primary law enforcement officer for their assigned schools, investigating and handling crimes that happen inside and on the school's property.
